What Rush Limbaugh Taught Me
As it has been extensively reported on in the news, Rush Limbaugh passed away last Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from lung cancer at the age of 70. He was a passionate supporter of conservative values, and a founding father of alternative media via AM talk radio. He loved God, family, and We The People, and was the “Doctor of Democracy” having “Talent on loan from God”. He also inspired countless small business owners to be philanthropic capitalists by starting multiple small businesses himself (ties, tee-shirts, books, etc.) and donating much of the proceeds to benefits various charities. Many in the media have said what Rush meant to them, and I too want to share what he meant to me, and what I learned from him.
Rush started his radio program in 1988 and it was only a couple of years later that I started listening to him. I enjoyed listening to Paul Harvey’s “Rest of the Story” and Rush came on after that program. As I began digesting what Rush was talking about, I heard what I had been thinking and believing. So much of the “Main Stream Media” or “Drive by Media”, as he would call them, didn’t reflect my values of God, family, fair trade, small government, and low taxes.
Over the three decades he was on the radio, I would tune in, from time to time, to hear what Rush had to say about the issues of the day. I wasn’t a “Dittohead” (a die hard fan), but I did appreciate most of the time what he had to say. I didn’t agree with him when it came to health issues like smoking cigars and dissing vegetarians. But, I did appreciate his tenacity, commitment to his craft, his love and kindness to others and his audience, and his humor.
However, what I will always remember Rush for the most, and what I learned from him was “The True Story of Thanksgiving” (click here). The link is a more recent version that you can listen to or watch, but he shared this history for years. I had been taught some of this story while attending a Christian school in my elementary years. But, what he emphasized was how this real life experience, demonstrated the truth about socialism vs. capitalism. I don’t remember being taught the differences of the two ideologies in school. However, learning about these differences from Rush, made me love the holiday even more.
So, I want to say thanks to Rush for sharing wise, conservative counsel, and for standing for truth, even when it was difficult. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. In the video below, Dr. Lance summarizes beautifully Rush’s legacy, and what he meant to our country as a secular prophetic voice.
The Bible says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14 Even though Rush’s voice has been silenced, his counsel will remain to keep those who are listening from falling. May you listen to true counsel, so that you will not fall and be blessed to be a blessing In Jesus Name! Go forth bold, blessed, and brilliant! Subscribe and comment below.
