N.E.W. S.M.A.R.T. Living Part 2
Last week in Part 1, I introduced the background and the concept of the acronym NEW SMART. This post will be a deeper dive into what each of the letters stand for and how I apply them to my life. As we learn and DO the principals of God’s kingdom, we will be blessed. “You know these things—now do them! That is the path of blessing.” John 13:17
To me, NEW SMART living incorporates the body, the soul (mind, will, and emotions), and the spirit. Many health programs include the whole body approach, however, this is my version of holistic health. NEW SMART living practices the eight laws of health - nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, mindset, air, rest, and trust in God.
N - NUTRITION
Body - We all know that what we put in our bodies affects our health, and there is a plethora of information about all types of diets - keto, vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, omnivore, pescatarian, fruitarian, etc. The bottom line is that we need to eat a good quality, whole foods diet that incorporates all the colors of the rainbow. Enjoy eating because God gave us our taste buds to relish the flavors, a sense of smell to make our mouth water, and eyes to see the beauty of food. Eating food, whether simple or fancy, brings joy especially when we share it with others we love. Can you tell I’m a foodie?
Even though I’ve been a vegetarian from birth, I especially enjoy desserts! However, I also balance out my eating with Intermittent Fasting. I rarely get sick and I think fasting has really contributed to that reality. Lastly, it’s important to find the right supplements and medications for you because everybody is unique. But, I also think it’s important to keep these to a minimum. I’m grateful that I don’t take any medications anymore (my story), and I take only a couple of supplements daily.
Mind - What are you feeding your mind throughout the day? Where are your thoughts dwelling? We’ll talk about this more in the M- Mindset section.
Spirit - The definition I like of a person’s spirit is aura, “the distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a person, thing, or place.” Its source is either the unholy influence of Satan’s kingdom, or the living breath of God within us, that flows out of us. (For a more in depth Bible study of spirit click here.) The best way to feed your spirit is by connecting with Holy Spirit through listening prayer and reading scripture.
E - EXERCISE
Body - Movement to keep the blood flowing and the body active is the key point in this section. Kinesthetic type people love to do all kinds of workouts, sports, and physical activities. However, I’m not that type of person. If you’re not that type of person either, make sure you incorporate some type of activity in your day to keep your body flowing and keep your body from atrophy. Easy ways to do this is by stretching at your desk, walking, taking the stairs, do extra lifting of the groceries, and simply getting out and enjoying nature (my favorite).
Mind - Exercising the mind is fun for me. I love to explore and learn about things that interest me. This blog has been a great way for me to exercise my mind. Whatever you like to do to be creative will stimulate the mind and keep it healthy. Reading scripture has been known to help those with brain injuries and learning disabilities. My daughter memorized scripture to help her overcome severe dyslexia. Click here for her story.
Spirit - The best way to exercise your spirit is to learn about your spiritual gifts and practice them. Holy Spirit will teach you. Start by reading 1 Corinthians 12 and 14.
W - WATER
Body - We all know that our bodies are mostly water, and it’s vital to drink enough good water daily to avoid dehydration and illness. You might also find colonics and enemas to be helpful if done with an experienced health practitioner. In addition, many forms of hydrotherapy for the outside of our bodies can also be helpful. Hot and cold showers, soothing baths with Epson salts, hot and cold fomentations, wet saunas, etc. are all very therapeutic.
Mind - Soaking worship music is a wonderful way to “water your mind”. Here is a link to a YouTube channel “Soaking In His Presence” that I’ve really enjoyed, especially when I do listening prayer.
Spirit - Here are 4 verses about the Holy Spirit described as water. Also, here’s a great praise song, that came out in 2005, you can dance to called “Water” sung by Ana Laura.
In Part 3 we’ll continue the SMART definitions. In the meantime, may you follow the path of doing so that you will be blessed and be a blessing In Jesus Name! Go forth bold, blessed, and brilliant. Thank you for sharing, subscribing, and commenting below.
